The prospect of a looming home renovation project can be both an exciting and stressful time for homeowners. It can be fun customizing and designing your house to your liking, but the thought of everything that you need to do to prepare for this remodeling can be overwhelming!

To help you make sure you’ve got everything covered, we’ve put together a list of some of the most important things that you need to do to prepare for your home renovation. So, take a deep breath, and relax – you’ve got this!

Should You Stay or Should You Go

Home renovations typically present three main problems to homeowners: they are noisy, dirty, and inconvenient. You have the construction workers and their tools making noise, dirt and debris flying everywhere as things are being destroyed and built, and the inconvenience of not being able to use certain rooms in your house.

If you think you’re not going to be able to live with these things during the renovation, which may last awhile, then it may be a good idea to stay elsewhere. Find a friend or relative with some extra space, rent an apartment or hotel room, or even take off on vacation.

On the other hand, if you plan on staying, decide which rooms are going to be reserved for your household. If you have a large family, you may need some members to be roommates, and you may even want to work out a bathroom schedule if another one is being remodeled.

Prepare the Room to be Renovated and Nearby Rooms

A good storage solution is essential, as you will need to remove everything from the room that you’re planning on renovating and put it somewhere. Make sure that you have extra space in your storage area for things from the adjacent rooms as well. There will be a lot of foot traffic in your hallways and nearby rooms from all of the different players participating in the remodel, so be sure to remove any kind of tripping hazards or any other delicate items that may be accidentally knocked off of tables, walls, or shelves.

As previously mentioned, renovations can also mean a lot of extra dirt and debris floating around your house. In order to protect your things, put away what you can and cover what you cannot with plastic wrap or sheets.

Plan for Your Kids and Pets

Kids, especially young ones, will undoubtedly be curious about everything and everyone that’s suddenly in your home all the time. Establish firm boundaries with them to make sure that they don’t get in the way of or hurt themselves on any of the equipment or construction materials. If they’re too young to understand (or too much trouble!), then you may have to supervise them constantly or spend more time outside of the house during the day.

Pets, while also curious, may be more frightened by all of the loud noises and changes around the house. If you expect that they’re going to be stressed during the renovation, you may want to plan for them to stay elsewhere until it’s over.
